What to do if you're locked out in Edmonton

Locking yourself out happens to just about everyone at some point. Maybe you stepped outside to grab the mail and the door swung shut behind you. Maybe you lost your keys somewhere between the parking lot and the front door. Whatever the reason, being locked out is stressful — especially in Edmonton, where standing outside in January is an urgency of its own.

Here's exactly what to do, step by step.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Don't Force It

The instinct when you're locked out is to try everything — jiggling the handle, pushing on the door, looking for an open window. Resist the urge to force anything. A damaged door frame or broken lock will cost you far more than a locksmith call, and in some cases can make the lockout harder to resolve without replacing hardware entirely.

No need to panic. You have options.

Step 2: Check Your Other Entry Points

Before calling anyone, do a quick walk around:

  • Back door or side entrance — did you leave it unlocked?

  • Windows — is there one slightly open on the ground floor? (only attempt this on your own property.)

  • Garage — if you have an attached garage with a keypad, that's your easiest way in

  • Spare key — do you have one with a neighbour, family member, or friend nearby?

If none of those work, it's time to call a locksmith.

Step 3: Call a Licensed Edmonton Locksmith

This is where a lot of people run into trouble — not because they called a locksmith, but because they called the wrong one.

In Edmonton and across Alberta, locksmiths are regulated under the Security Services and Investigators Act (SSIA). A legitimate locksmith must be licensed by the Government of Alberta to legally pick a lock or possess lockpicking tools. This matters more than most people realize — and it's something we cover in detail in our FAQ.

When you call, ask:

  • Are you licensed under the Alberta SSIA?

  • What is the full cost — not just the service call fee?

  • Can you give me an estimate before you start work?

A reputable locksmith will answer all three without hesitation. If the price suddenly shifts once they arrive, or they push immediately for a full lock replacement without attempting to pick it first, those are red flags. Walk away if you can — you may owe a service call fee, but you don't owe them the job.

Step 4: What Happens When We Arrive

The first thing we do is attempt to pick the lock.

Next, we assess whether — describe your actual process so clients know what to expect. For example: how you assess the lock, whether you always attempt picking first, how long a typical lockout takes, what ID you might ask for, etc. This is the most authentic part of the post and should be in your/Joe's voice.]

Step 5: Once You're Back Inside

Getting back in is the relief — but take five minutes to think about preventing it from happening again:

  • Get a spare key made and leave it with someone you trust nearby. We can do this for you on the spot. It only takes a few minutes.

  • Consider a keypad or smart lock for your front door — no key required

  • Rekey if you've lost your keys entirely — you don't know who might find them

Edmonton Winters Make This Urgent

A lockout anywhere is inconvenient. A lockout in Edmonton in February is a different story. If you're locked out in cold weather — especially at night — don't wait it out. Get inside somewhere warm while you wait for help: a neighbour's place, your car with the heat running, or a nearby business.
